COVID-19 Information: New Brunswickers can continue to benefit from our residential and business energy efficiency programs. The Community Outreach Program remains on hold to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Our employees and contractors follow pandemic operational plans aligned with Public Health to keep everyone safe.

Prior to an employee or contractor going inside your home or business, health screening will take place. Results of screening will determine if the appointment will proceed and the type of protective equipment to be used. We appreciate our customers’ patience and flexibility as we navigate the impacts of COVID-19 together.

Streetlights

Did you know that NB Power looks after approximately 72,000 street lights throughout communities all around the province? Keeping these lights shining bright is one of our most important tasks. That’s why we’re working hard to switch them all over to reliable, energy efficient LED lights.

Our LED Streetlight Replacement Program

This program involves replacing all 72,000 High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street lights with more efficient light - emitting diode (LED) lights and will take about five years to complete, following a balanced schedule of planned maintenance cycles, new installations and strategic change-outs.

Once all 72,000 LED street lights are installed, New Brunswick will benefit from annual energy savings of about 27,000,000 kilowatt hours, the amount of electricity required to power approximately 1,600 homes per year. This program will also result in greenhouse gas reduction of approximately 324,000 tonnes over 20 years, an amount equivalent to removing 3,000 cars from the road.

Why LED streetlights?

  • LED uses approximately 50-60% less energy compared to HPS street lights
  • LED technology is more reliable with a much longer life span compared to the current HPS bulbs (20 year design life vs. 6 years for HPS bulbs), so they require less maintenance, making them more economical to operate
