Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station Update
Fredericton, N.B. – The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS) is currently operating at 100 per cent reactor power.
The net capacity factor for October 2016 was 86.3 per cent. Capacity factor is the megawatt-hour output of a generating station compared to the maximum that could be produced.
Last month, the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS) generated 423,733 MWh of non-emitting electricity, representing approximately 51 per cent of the total net generation from NB Power generating stations.
Probabilistic Safety Assessment
In accordance with regulatory requirements, NB Power recently completed a Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. A PSA is a tool that assesses the probability and consequences of potential hazards to a facility in order to eliminate risk and drive safety improvements.
The results of the PSA demonstrate that the plant is safe and robust and can withstand a wide variety of hazards. Results indicate that all internationally-defined targets have been met and that no further plant improvements are required at this time to deal with possible internal and external hazards.
To learn more, a summary of the PSA results is available here.

About Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station
The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station is a 660 megawatt (net) nuclear generating station and a base load contributor to the New Brunswick electrical grid. It produces enough non-emitting electricity to power more than 333,000 homes per year and is a foundational piece of both our domestic energy supply and our export sales. Point Lepreau is a major component of the generating assets that will contribute to the provincial goal of having as much as 75 per cent of the electricity used in New Brunswick coming from clean, renewable or non-emitting sources by 2020.
